About Jaqui

My mind is always too busy except when I use my hands to create something new. Then it’s as if time stopped; instead of being caught up in my own thoughts, I’m getting messy: splashing paint, making marks, pasting papers, adding layers, and sanding them back. I keep playing until the composition is balanced, the dark and light values converse nicely, and I find unity in the piece. I often let the work rest and come back with fresh eyes the next day. This process never gets old for me and gives me an immense sense of accomplishment. That’s why I am an artist.

I create abstract mixed-media art. I work with acrylics, because they dry quickly and allow me to layer the paint with collage, ink, pencils, pastels, and ephemera. I make collage papers with non-traditional materials and use image transfers from my own photos because these add personal texture to the artwork. My practice is process-based; that is, the inspiration I get from making art feeds into the process itself. I want the results to convey a feeling of playfulness to the viewer.

I often think of my work as aerial landscapes or shapes abstracting bits of the inspiration I collected along the way: a peaceful landscape from a hike, the texture of pebbles on the beach, the shades of chromatic greys in the city, the shape of a building, the scratches on the walls, and the tree trunks along the way.

My work has been juried into exhibitions at the Target Gallery in the Torpedo Factory in Alexandria, Virginia; Second Street Gallery in Charlottesville; and many other local venues. I am part of the Columbia Pike Artists Studios.
